The Great South Wirral Row Off

On the weekend of 17th April 2020, South Wirral High School’s Deputy Headteacher – Mr Cloherty – will be part of a small armada of three boats from Warrior Training in Chester, attempting to row the 56 miles from Nieuwpoort, Belgium to Ramsgate, UK. All money raised will go towards ‘The Christie Charitable Fund‘, which provides enhanced services over and above what the NHS can fund in the care and treatment of cancer.

To support his fundraising, on Friday 20th March our students will compete against staff to see who can row the biggest distance using two rowing machines set up in the Main Hall. Student statisticians will update the leaderboard projected on a big screen showing the distance each group have completed, and our Tech Team will bet motivating participants with a playlist ranging from traditional sea shanties to inspirational pop hits. A few (un)lucky rowers will also be subjected to some of the stormy conditions Mr Cloherty is likely to encounter, with water pistols and storm effects scheduled throughout the day.

Signing up for the 10-minute slots available, students have been keen to pick times where they can compete against their favourite teachers for bragging rights.

Mr Cloherty – who himself has signed up for over an hour’s worth of rowing throughout the day – said:

“The Christie Charitable Fund is an organisation close to my heart and the hearts of many staff members at South Wirral High School. It is an honour to be able to give something back to the charity by taking on this mammoth task. I am hugely grateful to the staff and students for supporting me with my fundraising in what should be a memorable day!”
