South Wirral High School celebrates GCSE success across a diverse range of destinations

Students at South Wirral High School are today celebrating an excellent set of GCSE results, with this year’s Year 11 cohort reflecting the determination, resilience and ambition that have defined their five years at the school.

We are incredibly proud of every student who has worked hard to achieve their personal goals, many pushing well beyond what they believed possible and opening the door to genuinely exciting next steps.

Among those celebrating exceptional results are Jessica B, Divine A, Aiden R, Luke C, Harvey D, Will L, Hannah M, Leila S, Athena W, Paige W, Grysha Z and Ataliah T-P, a small sample of a year group in which countless students have shown determination, overcome challenges, and raised their sights higher than they thought possible.

What sets this year’s results apart is not only the grades themselves, but the breadth of destinations they’ve unlocked. Several students have secured places on competitive performance pathways at The Hammond School and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Others are progressing into Sixth Form at local Grammar Schools, proof that a non-selective school can prepare students to compete for, and win, selective places when the ambition and support are there. Many more are heading to Birkenhead Sixth Form College and other strong college pathways, while a growing number are starting highly aspirational apprenticeships, launching careers in fields they’ve discovered a genuine passion for.

That range matters to us. Not every student’s ambition looks the same, and we don’t believe it should. Whether a student’s next step is a grammar school sixth form, a performing arts conservatoire, a college campus or an apprenticeship on day one of a career, we count it as a South Wirral success story.

Our five core values, Kindness, Respect, Determination, Independence and Ambition, underpin everything we do, shaping not just how students perform academically but who they become: confident, resilient, responsible young adults ready for whatever comes next.

Headteacher Mike Cloherty said:

“Today is a day for our students, their families and our staff to feel incredibly proud. GCSE results are the culmination of years of hard work, but what makes this year group particularly special is the sheer range of futures they’re stepping into, from grammar school sixth forms to performing arts schools to apprenticeships starting real careers.

Our values are at the heart of South Wirral High School, and we’ve seen them lived out by this year group time and again. There are far too many individual success stories to mention, but every student who worked hard, overcame a challenge, or achieved something they once thought was out of reach should feel enormously proud today. Their success is richly deserved, and it belongs to them.

We look forward to seeing where their ambition, determination and independence take them next.

For families considering South Wirral High School, I’d encourage you to join us at our Open Evening on 23 September. We want prospective students and parents to see what makes our school special, and most importantly, to see how we work with every student as an individual to help them become who they’re capable of becoming. We have high expectations for every young person who joins us, and we are determined to help each one achieve their full potential.”
