The South Wirral Dynamos have successfully completed the “Race the Sun” challenge in the Lake District, raising £1,427 so far for Action Medical Research, a charity dedicated to funding medical research to help save and improve the lives of children. The event, which combines a 40-mile cycle, a 10.5-mile hike, and a 2-mile kayak, took place on September 7, 2024, against the stunning backdrop of Keswick’s mountains and lakes. This physically demanding triathlon-style challenge requires participants to race against the clock, starting at sunrise and aiming to finish before the sun sets.
Mr. Harrison reflected on the experience: “The kayaking section was a real test of endurance, especially after the hike and bicycle sections. But the views were spectacular, and knowing that we’re helping children facing serious medical challenges made it all worthwhile.”
Four staff members initially prepared for the challenge, but Mr. Stewart could not participate due to ill health. He expressed his pride in his teammates, stating: “Although I couldn’t participate this time, I’m incredibly proud of my team members. They demonstrated immense strength and determination, and I know they’ll make a significant impact through their efforts for Action Medical Research. I was with them in spirit every step of the way.”
The remaining team members—Mr. Cloherty, Mr. Harrison, and Mr. Moseley—completed the course, pushing through the grueling terrain and variable weather conditions that the Lake District is known for. Mr. Cloherty shared: “We really missed Mr. Stewart out there. His encouragement and leadership would have made a huge difference. We carried his spirit with us as we faced the challenges of the day, and we look forward to having him with us next time!”
Their participation in the “Race the Sun” challenge is not only a testament to their physical endurance but also a crucial step toward supporting the mission of Action Medical Research. The funds raised will go towards pioneering research, including developing new treatments for premature babies, finding cures for rare conditions, and improving the quality of life for children facing severe health challenges.
The team remains committed to their goal of raising £1,900 to further support this cause, and donations are still being accepted through their JustGiving page. They encourage anyone who is inspired by their story to contribute and help them make a lasting impact on children’s lives.
