Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the May half-term break, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a truly inspiring and successful few weeks here at South Wirral High School. Since Easter, our school community has experienced a range of achievements and events that showcase the determination, ambition, and spirit of our students and staff.
Celebrating Student Achievement
We were incredibly proud to host our Lower School Presentation Evening, where we celebrated the outstanding achievements of students in Years 7, 8 and 9. It was a pleasure to see so many families joining us to recognise the hard work, dedication, and progress of our young people. The atmosphere was full of pride, and it was a reminder of the strength and potential within our school community.
We also want to congratulate our Year 10 Football Team, who reached the final of the Wirral Schools Cup. They put in an excellent performance in a tightly contested match against Pensby at Prenton Park, just narrowly missing out on the trophy. The quality of play was matched only by the brilliant support from parents, carers and fellow students, whose energy and encouragement truly made it a special occasion.
Community Values and Leadership in Action
At South Wirral, we take great pride in our community focus and values in action. This half term, six of our students were highly commended for their quick-thinking, kindness and care when they assisted an elderly member of the community who had been injured near the school. Their compassion and maturity reflect everything we aim to instil in our young people.
We are also proud of our Sports Leaders, who volunteered their time and skills to referee at a primary school tournament hosted by Heygarth Primary School. Their leadership and professionalism were exemplary and warmly praised by organisers.
Another highlight was our recent trip to see Sale Sharks, where students were inspired by the high level of athleticism, teamwork and sportsmanship on display. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about elite sport and experience the excitement of a professional game environment.
Outdoor Education and Enrichment
Our commitment to personal development has continued through the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. Our Silver DofE participants in Year 10 successfully completed their training expedition, covering 32km across three days with great resilience. Additionally, our Bronze DofE cohort completed their qualifying expedition, and we are incredibly proud of the determination and teamwork shown by all involved. A huge thank you to Ms Excel and her dedicated team for organising and leading these memorable and character-building experiences.
Academic Focus and Examination Season
Our Year 11 and Year 13 students are now deep into their GCSE and A-Level exam periods. They have shown exceptional determination, ambition, and resilience—overcoming personal and academic challenges to approach their exams with positivity and focus. We are immensely proud of their commitment and maturity and will continue to support them through this crucial time.
New Leadership and Behaviour Focus
We were pleased to welcome Mr Owens-Jones to the South Wirral leadership team this half term as our new Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Attendance. He has already made a positive impact, and we are excited about the work he will be leading to ensure excellent behaviour and outstanding attendance for all students, supporting every learner to thrive
Looking Ahead
There is much to look forward to in the final half-term of the academic year. Plans are well underway for our end-of-year rewards trips to Alton Towers and Drayton Manor, where students who have met our values and expectations will enjoy a well-deserved celebration of their efforts.
We’re also excited about the upcoming Year 10 work experience placements, which will see every student in the year group spend two weeks developing real-world skills in a variety of industries and settings. This is a fantastic opportunity to broaden horizons and inspire future ambitions. The next half term will also see students from different year groups setting off to Kenya for an unbelievable experience working within a school community in Africa
Thank You
Finally, I want to extend a sincere thank you to all of our parents and carers for your continued support. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines, attending evening events, or supporting your children through revision and exams, your role is vital to everything we achieve as a school.
Wishing you and your families a restful and enjoyable half-term break.
Warm regards,
Mike Cloherty
