Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of this half term, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a busy and exciting start to 2024 at South Wirral High School.
The half term began with some challenges as we experienced adverse weather conditions, which unfortunately led to the school being closed for two of the first five days. I want to personally thank all parents and carers for your patience and understanding during this period. I would also like to commend our students for the mature way in which they conducted themselves when on-site during the snowy conditions—it was great to see their resilience and positivity shining through.
One of the highlights of this half term was the Year 7 trip to see Rapunzel at the pantomime in Liverpool. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Ms Dominguez and other staff supporting, this trip was able to go ahead despite the disruption. We were immensely proud of how our Year 7 and 9 students represented the school, and it was particularly heartwarming to hear that members of the public approached staff to express their gratitude for the students’ enthusiasm, which made the theatre experience even more enjoyable.
Despite the shorter half term, we have managed to pack in a huge number of enriching experiences for our students. We hosted our Year 11 and Sixth Form Parents’ Evening, supported students on Geography field trips, and saw our Year 8 students compete in a regional indoor rowing competition. Our Year 10 and 12 students had the fantastic opportunity to have their work exhibited at the Lady Lever Gallery, while others participated in an interactive music workshop with a professional band.
This week alone, our entire Year 8 group took part in a CEIAG STEM event in school, showcasing their curiosity and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and maths. Additionally, our Year 11 football team secured a thrilling victory over Mosslands in a tight cup match, winning on penalties to advance to the quarter-finals—a fantastic achievement!
One of the most exciting new initiatives this half term has been the introduction of our Values and Standards cards. The response from students has been fantastic, and the Values card, in particular, has been an excellent way for staff to reward and recognise students who demonstrate our school values of kindness, respect, determination, independence, and ambition. We are now looking at new and exciting ways to further reward students as they collect value signatures, and we can’t wait to see how this initiative continues to grow.
I want to thank all parents and carers for your continued support in ensuring that South Wirral High School remains a thriving, vibrant community where students can excel. Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming students back for another exciting half term ahead.
Best wishes,
Michael Cloherty
