The Science Department has 9 laboratories that are all equipped with interactive whiteboards. There are 10 members of the department who all teach their specialism at GCSE and AS/A2. The department has two full time science technicians who provide apparatus for experiments and are also responsible for the ordering and maintenance of equipment.
At KS3 the students follow the QCA scheme of work and they sit examinations Christmas and Summer in order to monitor their progress towards the targets that have been set for them.
Students at SWHS study a condensed Science curriculum – completing KS3 at the end of Year 8.
In Year 7 the students are currently taught science in English sets
In Year 8 & 9 the students are taught in science sets and will have a specialist teacher for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Year 9 students start the GCSE course early, studying a range of Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics from the OCR Gateway specification.
In Y 10/11 the students have three options available to them for study at KS4.
- OCR Triple Science,
- OCR GCSE Science/Additional Science
- BTEC Level 2 Applied Science
All KS4 students are given challenging targets and their progress is closely monitored towards achieving these.
The Department offers a range of extra- curricular opportunities which include:-
- Chester Zoo visit
- Presentation from Wirral Herpetological Society
- Science Club
- Visits to Liverpool University
At AS/A2 the Department offers OCR Biology, OCR Chemistry and BTEC level 3 Applied Science.
The department is proud of its examination results but we always strive to achieve better.
