In 2012, the Modern Languages Department was awarded the Prince’s Teaching Institute Mark in recognition of increased challenge within the curriculum, enthusing students through subject-based activities beyond the curriculum, developing staff’s own subject knowledge and developing subject based links outside school.
We are proud to offer both French and German to all students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Our approach to languages teaching is firmly focused on developing students’ active use of their languages, thereby promoting achievement and enjoyment.
We also offer a taster course in Spanish for students in Year 9 who wish to widen their basic language skills.
In Years 10 and 11, French and German are both available at GCSE and we also offer NVQ Business French level 2. Our students have a consistent record of exam success at GCSE and A level. Increasing numbers of students are opting to continue with at least one language to the end of Year 11.
There are five members of the department, all of whom can teach at least two languages. We also welcome two Language Assistants to our school each year, who work with our students in class and in small groups to practise and develop their spoken language.
We organise regular trips abroad to enable students to visit places relevant to their language learning and to promote appreciation of different cultures. Recent trips have included Paris, France, and the Black Forest in Germany.
