The Design and Technology Department actively contributes to the success of the school. It prepares students to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. They learn to think and intervene creatively to improve quality of life. The subject calls for students to become autonomous and creative problem solvers, as individuals and members of a team. They must look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products and systems. They combine practical skills with an understanding of social and environmental issues, aesthetics, function and industrial practices. As they do so, they reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and effects. Through Design and Technology, all students can become discriminating and informed users of products, and become innovators.
All students in KS3 have 2 lessons per week in Design and Technology. Extensive schemes of work have been designed to cover all the programs of study in the national curriculum. Students may choose to study Resistant Materials, Graphic Products or Food Technology at KS4. Students who are awarded a GCSE grade C or higher in Resistant Materials or Graphic Products are invited to study Product Design at “AS” and “A” level.
PROJECTS COMPLETED IN YEAR 7
Students will learn about working with acrylic. They will design a key-fob and using coping saws learn how to cut the material. They will produce a quality item with a good finish using files, abrasive paper and polish .
Students will complete a Computer Aided Manufacturing programme and will see a demonstration of mass production techniques using CAMM2 cutting a class set of Key Fobs.
The students will design and make a pull-a-long children’s toy using traditional woodworking techniques, hand and machine tools. The project will use a cam mechanism to convert rotary motion to reciprocating motion.
ELECTRONIC PRODUCT HOLDER
Students will be shown how to recognise the most important design considerations. They will use graphics techniques to make a cardboard model to show the important features. Pupils will be shown the need to carry out processes in a particular sequence. They must produce a 3D Electronic Product holder, which must be recognisable as a progression from the cardboard model.
