We have a broad dance curriculum where all students in Year 7 and 8 have one hour of dance a week and experience a range of dance styles such as; Contemporary, Street Dance, African, Hip Hop, Locking, Popping, Jazz, Break-Dance, and thematic dance with a selection of props i.e. chairs, masks, canes etc. In year 9 students can opt to study dance for half of the year, or be selected to take Expressive Arts GCSE completed in Year 9 in one year.
At Key Stage 4 students can opt to take GCSE Dance and BTEC First Level 2 in Performing Arts (Dance). Our results have been exceptional with 100% A*- C for 2009, 2010 and 94% A*- C for year 2012. The BTEC Dance course has had a 100% pass rate with over ¾ of students achieving Distinction*.
At Key Stage 5 students can progress to take A Level Dance and Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts. Again our results have been exceptional with 100% A – B at AS and A’Level since offering the course in sixth form.
Dance is one of the most popular extra-curricular activities with over 120 students attending clubs on a weekly basis. Any student can be involved in a dance club regardless of experience and ability, with dance clubs for every year group from years 7 – 13. Dance is equally popular with the boys as well as the girls.
There are three Dance Companies students can audition for and have intensive dance training taken by a professional dancer in a range of the latest styles. These are Pre-Vision Dance Company for girls in Year 7-9, Vision Dance Company for our most talented boys and girls in the school and Illusion Boys Dance Company. In previous years our Dance Companies have been asked to open up the Regional Arts Award Conference in Liverpool at the BT Conference Centre, to perform in front of Estelle Morris at the North England Education Conference, to perform at the HMI’s Regional Dinner in Warrington and invited to perform at the Wirral PE Inspector’s leaving event at the Village Hotel in Wirral.
Students are given a host of opportunities in Dance. Successful Performing Arts trips have been to Lake Garda and Barcelona in the last two years taking over 90 students. Our older Dance Leaders take a Dance showcase on tour to local schools, fully organised by our students. We are in Partnership with Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) who run an intensive training programme for our Gifted and Talented young dancers. Also for the last 5 years, we have been part of the Machismo Boys Dance Project ran by Wirral Youth Theatre, where our male dancers go and work with Contem-Break Dance Company.
