The Music Curriculum

Key Stage 3
During Key Stage 3 girls are taught Music in mixed-ability groups with lessons incorporating the different skills of performance, composition, listening and appraising as laid out in the National Curriculum. They have the opportunity to explore a wide range of music developing skills as a musician.

Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 students are able to opt to study Music GCSE on the AQA specification. The students who choose Music at this level will have a range of interests and specialisms and work alongside each other to develop their skills in the three strands of learning; performance (40% of total GCSE) , composition (40% of total GCSE) and listening and appraising (20% of total GCSE). The GCSE provides them with the opportunity to research topics in more depth and develop their knowledge and skills in a range of areas.

As well as developing their skills and knowledge, the students will create one composition (Unit 4) and performance (Unit 3 – solo) in Year 10. In Year 11, the students will compose another piece of music, which has a focus set by the board (Unit 2), and another performance (Unit 3- Group), as well as taking their exam in listening and appraising Music at the end of year (Unit 1).

Specific Entry requirements

  • A genuine passion for music
  • A good work ethic
  • Ability to perform on at least one instrument
  • Graded exams in your instrument/theory would be preferred
  • Regular participation in at least one Music enrichment activity is compulsory

Key Stage 5
We offer the opportunity to study BTEC Level 3 Music (Performance) on the EDEXCEL specification. This course is very demanding but allows the students to become skilled, confident musicians. The course offers scope for students to be independent, creative and pursue their own interests within the framework of structured assessment.
The units studied on this course are:

Year 12

  • Music Performance Techniques – The opportunity to focus and develop your skills in one instrument of your choice
  • Music Project – Create a music event of your groups choosing, including planning, organisation, rehearsal, management and performance
  • Music in the Community – The opportunity to see how Music is used in communities, with the opportunity to teach Music workshops in a local Primary school and to GCSE students

Year 13

  • Pop Music in Practice – Discover how pop music and the technology behind the music has developed since the 1950’s. Including performing 3 pieces of pop music from the past and composing 3 of your own pop songs
  • Studying Music from around the World – Look into how music changes around the world. Including performing 2 pieces of western music influenced by world music and composing 2 of your own world music pieces
  • Special Subject investigation – Your opportunity to delve into a topic within music that interests you

Specific Entry requirements

  • Grade C or above at GCSE Music (Speak to a member of Music staff if you have not taken GCSE Music)
  • Ability to perform at Grade 5 standard on at least one instrument
  • Organised and independent
  • Regular participation in at least one Music enrichment activity is compulsory
