Course Overview

Studying Applied Science can lead to a range of fascinating and rewarding careers such as Forensic Scientist, Biomedical Scientist, trainee Science Technician. This course can also be a platform to gain an Apprentice e.g Pharmacy or Dental Apprenticeship programmes. The two year extended certificate course includes:
Year 1 - two units
  • Principles and applications of Science 1 (external assessment) Unit size 90
  • Practical Scientific procedures and Techniques ( internal assessment of assignments) Unit side 90
Year 2 - two units
  • Scientific Investigative Skills (external assessment) Unit size 120
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction (internal assessment of assignments) Unit size 60
You’ll gain hands on experience with practical activities such as titration, colorimetry, calorimetry, chromatography, calibration procedures and laboratory safety. These techniques are used in contract analysis, oil, biopharmaceuticals, water treatment and polymers. You’ll also improve your analytical, evaluative and technical skills when completing the science investigative skills unit.The optional unit we have chosen is human regulation and reproduction. This covers an understanding of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, homeostasis and the hormonal control of reproduction. This will provide you with the skills employers look for, and prepare you for a range of roles in the scientific industries or give you an excellent foundation for progression to Higher Education studying biochemistry, chemistry, forensic science and environmental science.
