This was a game in which Tranmere were looking to move clear of the relegation places and Wycombe were looking to strengthen their grip on the automatic promotion places.
An early volley form Sam Saunders showed Wycombe’s intent before Harrison McGahey was adjudged to have handled in the box and Paul Hayes slotted the resulting penalty home to give Wycombe the lead.
A cross from Max Power allowed a scramble in the Wycombe penalty area with the goal being credited firstly to Adam Dugdale but then it was later given to on loan Preston striker Jordan Hugill.
Power then went close for the hosts before in-form Millwall loanee Fred Onyedinma latched onto a well-placed pass to give the Wycombe the lead again five minutes before the break.
Joe Jacobson then saw his set-piece narrowly go over the Tranmere goal on the hour before substitute Matt McClure was sent off for an elbow just seventy-five seconds after coming on.
Tranmere ‘Keeper Fon Williams then smartly denied Jacobson before Lee Molyneux and Adam Dugdale were denied in the Wycombe area with the latter being denied on the line.
The result leaves Tranmere outside the relegation places on goal difference and Wycombe tightened their hold on third place.
